There is a chance you won’t have to pay that traffic ticket...

Chances are, you know someone who has gotten a speeding ticket lately...

According to Gary Biller, president of the National Motorists Association, many police forces are issuing unusually high numbers of tickets to close budget gaps. If you do get one – there are some strategies you can try to reduce or avoid paying them:

• Contest the ticket. Biller says it’s worth a try. Drivers are sometimes offered a plea bargain that keep their driving records clean and insurance rates low.

• Check the box. On the ticket, there may be a box to request a written report of the traffic stop. If you don’t receive that within the designated time, the case may be dismissed.

• Postpone the court appearance. If the officer who wrote the ticket doesn’t show up, the ticket will be dismissed.
