It’s Skin Cancer Awareness Month – don’t forget your dog!

Save some of that sunscreen for the dog!

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and veterinarian Ann Hohenhaus says melanoma is fairly common in dogs. The spots that need checking are the mouth and gums and where the nails meet the toes. Melanoma in these spots can be particularly dangerous. Look for freckles, discoloration or anything out of the ordinary and point that out to your veterinarian.

Short or white-haired dogs really do need some sunscreen if they spend a lot of time outside. If your dog likes to sunbathe on its back, you’ll need sunscreen on that tender tummy too. There is sunscreen on the market specifically for dogs – and baby sunscreen is another non-toxic option.
