The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration want Americans to become a “weather-ready nation"...

It’s time to get packing...

May is peak tornado season and hurricane season is just around the corner. In order to be prepared for rough weather, NOAA says we should all have and emergency preparedness kit packed up and ready to go. Ready.gov has plenty of information about what should be in your kit. Here are the basics:

• One gallon of water per person per day, for drinking and sanitation
• Non-perishable food and a manual can opener
• A battery-powered or hand crank radio and extra batteries
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• First aid kit
• Whistle to signal for help
• Filter mask or cotton t-shirt, to help filter the air
• Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
• Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
• Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
• Important family documents in a waterproof container
• Items for unique family needs, such as daily prescription medications, infant formula or diapers

It’s also a good idea to have a family picture in there, including the pets. You and your family need to make a plan that includes where everyone will gather or meet if you get separated. It only takes a few minutes to discuss and can save precious time in a crisis situation.
