To hug, or not to hug – that is the question...

Everyone needs a hug once in a while – but if it’s in the work place, hug with caution...

There are a few things to consider when it comes to professional hugging. If you work in a laid back and friendly environment, it’s usually fine. In the healthcare profession, it might even be expected or part of the job. If your field is more corporate or cut-throat, hugging might even be frowned upon. According to a survey by staffing agency The Creative Group, 7 in 10 executives said embracing co-workers in a business setting is inappropriate.

If you’ve just GOT to hug someone – and you’re not sure how that might be received – consider the more casual side hug. Hugging from the front or back could be awkward and invasive to the other person’s personal space or comfort zone. If you have to think about it – an extended handshake and warm smile would probably have a much better impact.
