If you think of small talk as a waste of time – think again...

How are the wife and kids? Nice weather we’re having...

Those might sound like run of the mill filler talk – but chit-chat like that actually says a lot more than you might think. Don Gabor, author of “Turn Small Talk into Big Deals,” says engaging in small talk sends a message that we’re open for communication. Chit-chat can help build trust and rapport with strangers and increase the odds of building a long-term, beneficial relationship.

To make the most of your small talk – pay attention. You’ll need to establish eye contact – and choose a nonthreatening small-talk topic. Look for something in the immediate vicinity you can both relate to. Avoid something that might sound like a complaint, unless it’s light-hearted - it’s important to stay positive. Also, try to match the other person’s body language and speaking tone – and don’t forget to smile – even if they’re not.
