If you see school supplies labeled “antibacterial” – don’t buy them.
There’s a new trend in marketing school supplies. Some basic items such as pens, pencils, scissors and binders are labeled “antibacterial” or “antimicrobial.” These supplies could be bad news for your kids. They most likely contain the chemical triclosan, an EPA-registered pesticide linked to hormone disruption, allergies and thyroid problems.
Not only are these chemically induced school supplies potentially harmful – you’ll pay more for them too. To avoid triclosan in back-to-school products, stay away from the ones labeled with these words:
• Microban
• Antimicrobial
• Lexol 300
• Irgasan DP-300
• Biofresh
