The next time you’re asked a question you DON’T know the answer to...

It happens to the best of us – we’re asked a question we should know the answer to but don’t.

Instead of responding with “I don’t know” or taking a wild guess, Jodi Glickman, author of “Great on the Job,” has a three part answer:

1. “Here’s what I know.” Nobody is expected to remember everything – collect your thoughts and come up with a relevant tidbit you DO know.

2. “Here’s what I don’t know.” After explaining what you do know, go ahead and admit you don’t have all the answers at the moment. Acknowledge you’re not answering the specific question.

3. “Here’s how I’ll figure it out.” Explain you want to be sure to get it right and will need to do x, y and z first. You might want to ask for a deadline or if there’s anything else they might need while you’re finding answers.
