15% has been standard tipping for reasonable service in a restaurant for a long time...
...but more people are likely to leave 20% or more. The average restaurant tip in the U.S. comes in around 19%.
Now, what about takeout? Most people do NOT tip for takeout. But according the experts at Chow.com – you should probably tip about 10%. Someone has to take your order, prepare your food, get it right and box it up. If the person taking your order had to help you with the menu or accommodate your special requests – they’ve earned a tip.
