If you’ve ever dreamed of being an author – make it a reality!
Just about anyone can publish a book these days. With many self-publishing and marketing options out there – wannabe authors aren’t at the mercy of landing a book deal any more. Sue Collier, author of “The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing,” says print on demand is one way to go. That way you’ll only pay for what you sell. You won't need a lot of cash up front or wind up stuck with a garage full of unsold books. Publishing an e-book is another great option if you don’t need the hard copy – and it can be done for next to nothing. Whichever way you decide to go – there are a few things you REALLY should do to give you and your book a real shot at success:
• Find a qualified editor. Social networks like Facebook and LinedIn are a great resource. They may charge a few hundred dollars but it’s worth the investment. Just be sure to have them edit a sample portion first to be sure you get your money’s worth.
• Have the cover professionally designed. Potential buyers WILL judge a book by its cover.
• Market your book. Every author needs a blog and should update it several times a week. Network with other authors and potential buyers and share exposure.
• When your book first comes out – embark on a virtual book tour for about a month. That book won't sell itself. Alert the local media and be sure to contribute to other blogs and web sites related to the subject of your book.
A personal word to the wise - children's books with illustrations can be a lot pricier to self-publish. Quality color images, unusual sizing, hard covers and heavier paper stock are all premium elements. Don't be discouraged, it can be done. It's best to print just a few to shop around to publishers or consider the e-book option to be enjoyed tablet style. Amazon.com has a good self-publishing program available which includes selling your book on Amazon with no cost up front. They will take a reasonable cut of each sale. Avoid self-publishing outlets that charge a big fee up front - you'll have to sell a ton of books to recoup that and they may wind up with legal rights to your book.
