Today’s forecast is partly cloudy, with a chance of dark lightning. ..

Don’t worry, it won’t reach us on the ground - but it’s happening somewhere around 30,000 feet. Dark lightning is an invisible, radioactive dark spray around regular lightning. It’s got a million times the energy of white lightening and occurs most often at cruising altitude.

Experts say there’s a concern that airplane passengers may be exposed to radiation from dark lightning field and that more research needs to be done on the phenomenon. More advanced dark lightning detection could help guide aircraft around potential exposure in the future.
