Monarch butterflies are in trouble. How you can help...

The monarch butterfly is one of natures most iconic sights...

Sadly, their population is in trouble. Experts say this is the worst year on record for our brightly colored buddies due to loss of habitat and increase of pesticide use. Monarch butterfly protection groups say we can help. They want us to plant some milkweed which the butterfly larvae feed on in North America.

If you’d like to help a monarch, you can design a mini habitat in your own backyard. You’ll need some butterfly weed, a flowering form of milkweed. You’ll also need a sunny spot and a butterfly bath. The bath can be in a shallow dish with wet sand and some stones for your monarch to bask in the sun upon. If you see white spots or caterpillars on your butterfly weed, let them be. Those are your monarchs in the making.
