If you like to walk on trails – you should know how to read them too...

Most popular trails have some important markers along the way...

These trail markers, or blazes can really enhance your journey if you know how to read them. Here are a few to look for:

• A single blaze, or painted mark on a tree, just lets you know you’re still on the same path. They’re often color coded.

• A double blaze is there to let you know that you’re about to cross a road or change direction.

• A cairn is a small pile of rocks. They are also there to let you know you’re still on the same trail when trees or other marking materials aren’t available. If the formation of the cairns change along the way, that could indicate a change in direction or conditions ahead.

• Flagging consists of colored tape or fabric on trees and is usually used for temporary or unofficial trails.

The beginning of most trails is indicated by a triangular blaze and when you see the inverted triangular blaze – you’re probably at the end.
