Career expert Alison Green has 10 signs that the interviewer is just not into you:
• Mentions the company is talking with a LOT of candidates: Translation - don’t get your hopes up.
• Checking email, texting or looking bored: You’ve lost them.
• Being vague about next steps: A good interviewer will be sure that strong candidates know exactly what will happen next.
• Unconcerned about your other offer: If they really want you, they don’t want to lose you. They will ask you to wait to make a decision.
• Focusing on areas where you DON’T have skills: It’s an easy way to discourage the wrong candidate.
• Interrupting you: Either you’re rambling, or they’ve lost interest.
• Ending the interview quickly: There’s no point in dragging out an interview with the wrong person.
• Skipping or rushing through YOUR questions: If they’re interested, they’ll want to address all of your questions.
• Expressing Concerns: Statements like “I think you might have trouble with…” or “I’m concerned you don’t have more experience in…” are a bad sign.
• Offering free career advice: Go ahead and listen to the feedback, but don’t count on an offer for the position you’re there for.
