You’ve probably heard that adding a raw potato to a soup or stew with too much salt could save the day...
According to Robert Wolke, author of “What Einstein Told His Cook,” it’s just not true. He says there is no reason a potato would specifically attract salt. If you remove the raw potato from the soup, the potato will taste salty, but so would a sponge -- it has simply soaked up some of the salty liquid.
If you have ruined something with too much salt, you could try adding a bit of vinegar or sugar, depending on the dish, to cancel out some of the saltiness.
