Thanks to pink and blue – we can tell what gender that baby is – but that wasn’t always the case...
Every culture has a way to tell baby boys and girls apart. It’s pretty much pink and blue here – but it wasn’t always that way. Thanks to nursery rhymes, blue has been associated with baby boys for a long time – but according to cultural historian Jo Paoletti, girls really didn’t have a color until much later. The Sears catalog is our best resource to track when the assigned colors really took hold for boys and girls. It wasn’t until the late 1950’s and early 60s that pink and blue baby clothes were designated for boys or girls.
