Is your doctor okay? Probably not...

We expect doctors to make us feel better – but what about them?

Recent studies suggest 40 to 60 percent of doctors are suffering from burnout. That’s obviously bad news for them – and not great for us either. A study published in the journal “Family Practice” found doctors suffering from burnout wrote more prescriptions, ordered more tests and spent less time talking with patients. They also made more errors in diagnosis and treatment. Here are some signs your doctor could be burned out:

• Shorter office visits: A normal 15 minute appointment is now closer to 5.

• Air of distraction: The doctor has trouble focusing or is too quick with a diagnosis.

• Lack of empathy: The doctor seems disinterested or is quick to change the topic when you have concerns.

If you suspect your doctor is suffering from burnout – speak up. Ask them how they are and if everything is okay. You may learn that they’re just having one bad day – but showing your concern can help them recognize there’s a problem and maybe even prevent a mistake with you or another patient.
