Do you put egg shells in the garbage disposal? That’s not good...

Garbage disposals are a handy catch-all to have in the kitchen – but according to Kitchen Daily – there’s practically no point in having one...

Here’s there list of what NOT to put in there:

• Any oil or hot, liquid fat should not go down the garbage disposal or the drain. When the grease cools, it solidifies in the drain and can cause big problems.

• Fibrous vegetables like celery, asparagus, and artichokes can wrap around the blade and clog things up.

• Lettuce, potato peels and onion peels can stick to the blades or sides.

• Egg shells should not be put in the garbage disposal because the thin membrane on the inside of the shell can wrap itself around the blade of the disposal.

• Coffee grounds, though appearing to go down the drain just fine, can get stuck in the trap of your garbage disposal. It's best to throw out coffee grinds the old fashioned way or compost them.

• Pits from fruits like peaches, plums and apricots can really damage your disposal. Even smaller cherry and olive pits can mess things up.

• Unless you’ve got a heavy duty disposal, bones from chicken, pork, lamb or beef should never go into the garbage disposal. It’s not strong enough to handle those. Most fish bones are okay though.

If you’ve heard putting bones or egg shells in the garbage disposal helps to sharpen the blades – it’s not really true. Putting ice cubes in there is the safest way to improve your disposal’s performance. They don’t actually sharpen the blades – but they are good at knocking loose any debris or buildup on there.
