CFL light bulbs save energy and last longer – but only if you use them right...

Chances are you’re already buying CFL light bulbs – or will be soon...

It’s true they last longer – but only if you use them right. Consumer Reports reminds us to read the packaging on CFL bulbs before you screw them in. Here are a few CFL don’ts:

• Dimming a non-dimmable: Unless the package says it’s dimmable – don’t do it.

• Trapped heat: CFLs are sensitive to heat build-up – and it will shorten their life. Read the fine print and check whether they can be used in enclosed fixtures and recessed cans.

• Rain and snow: You need to check if that CFL is rated for wet locations or cold climates.

• Sensors and timers: Most CFLs can NOT be used with motion sensors or electronic timers. It may be easier to go with LEDs or halogen bulbs for those.

Once you’ve invested in the right CFL for the right lighting – leave it on. Repeatedly turning them on and off significantly shortens their life, especially if it’s been on for less than 15 minutes.
