Keratin does wonders for frizzy hair - but don’t do it...

Nothing makes hair as silky and smooth as a keratin treatment - but it’s still not safe..

Keratin treatments became all the rage a few years ago and came under scrutiny shortly thereafter. Salon keratin treatments contained a strong mixture of formaldehyde which, when inhaled or absorbed through the skin, has been linked to some serious health risks.

Since then, keratin formulas have changed and some are even labeled “formaldehyde-free.” However, according to Amy McMichael, professor of dermatology, many these formulas contain ingredients that actually turn into formaldehyde during the heat application.

Dr. McMichael says, if you still get keratin treatments, it’s time to stop. Cumulative exposure increases your risk. Even if you don’t use the keratin, you could be at risk. If you’re salon offers them, ask to book your appointment when they can guarantee you won’t be inhaling someone else's toxic treatment.
