Is that teen driver safer in a big car or SUV?

You might think a new, teen driver would be better off in a big, safe SUV...

According to Consumer Reports, that’s not the case. They say teen drivers are safest in what we consider traditional cars or sedans. Their experts say large pickups and SUVs are not recommended for young inexperienced drivers because they are more prone to roll over and may be more difficult to handle than other vehicles. Sports cars increase the risk of speeding and have a higher rate of accidents, and consequently, they carry tuition-sapping and head-spinningly high insurance premiums. If you’re in the used-car market for a teen driver, here are Consumer Reports’ top five picks for under $15,000::

* Chevy Malibu - 2009, 2010

* Hyundai Sonata - 2008, 2009, 2010

* Mazda 6 - 2009, 2010

* Volkswagen Jetta: 2009
