Old wine can be good. Really old wine - not so much. What it used to taste like...

Good old wine has been around forever, well, almost...

Wine making dates back at least 6,000 years. It was the go-to beverage for many civilizations. Milk and water were often full of disease and unsafe to drink, while the alcohol in fermented fruit juice proved medicinal and made it a safer choice.

So how did this ancient wine taste? Not very good. Experts have analyzed remnants found in archaic jugs. Old wine was usually fortified with herbs and spices and was likely quite gritty and vinegary. Most vintages were stored in clay jugs with tree resins added for not-so-subtle hints of turpentine and a feety finish.
