The oven's on fire! What to do next ...

Your oven is hot and greasy - and probably has some debris in there...

Oven fires erupt for even the most careful cooks - and how you handle it can make all the difference. Here is the best oven fire prootocol:

2. Turn the oven off and allow the fire to burn out on its own.

3. If it does not go out, leave the house and call 911.

4. If it does go out, open your windows first.

5. Carefully open the oven door and allow the smoke to clear before trying to determine the cause.

6. Have the oven checked before using it again.

Microwaves are prone to oven fires too. Follow the same steps as you would for a conventional oven - and DO NOT open the door if you see flames.
