Researchers from Tokyo University dug up some really sad and somber music and it did wonders for their subjects. They said those depressing ballads actually cheered people up by reminding them of romance and emotional situations that ultimately made them feel better.
The theory is that listening to sad music lets us experience and appreciate sadness for the powerful emotion it is, without simultaneously feeling the pain of a real life experience.
