Mobile Headache

There’s an app for your smartphone that might just give you a headache...

If you’re planning on downloading an application for your smartphone or device that is 3D – you might want to download some aspirin with that. In a new Journal of Vision study, prolonged viewing of 3D on mobile devices and other stereo viewing devices can cause headaches, fatigue and visual discomfort. This kind of viewing forces your eyes to converge images at unrealistic distances.

These 3D effects are worse on mobile devices and laptops than a 3D film would be because of the close distance. It’s as if you’re looking through a window at something in the distance – but in reality, it’s much closer – and your brain knows that. Limiting viewing time to a few minutes at a time might help – but it’s no guarantee you won’t wind up with a headache.
