Vernon Schmidt, author of “The Appliance Handbook for Women: Simple Enough Even Men Can Understand,” says people make the mistake of cleaning their oven right before Thanksgiving or another big event. Ovens are most likely to fail during or right after the self-cleaning cycle because of the very high temperatures involved. It’s not easy getting an oven fixed around the holidays or on a weekend when repair shops and parts distributors are busy or closed.
Midweek in the summer is probably your best bet for that oven clean. If something goes wrong, you can always fire up the grill.
