Should we really be taking 10,000 steps a day?

You probably know someone who tries to take 10,000 steps a day for fitness.

It’s a new trend that has put pedometers and fitness apps in high demand. But according to Catrine Tudor-Locke, director of the Walking Behavior Laboratory at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La., taking 10,000 steps isn't really necessary. She even discourages it. Catrine says there’s no magic number and that the CDC recommends just 7 to 8,000 steps a day. The average adult walks roughly 5,900 steps a day and adding a 15 to 30 minute walk per day will get you there.
