If you’ve just got to have something salty –
try looking at some photos first.
A
recent study from Brigham Young University put the food photos to the test and
found that viewing photos of what you’re craving can actually diminish the urge
a bit. It’s important that you look at
photos similar to what you’ve got a hunger for, or the trick could
backfire. In the study, participants were
asked to view photos of food and then eat some peanuts. Those who looked at salty food rated the taste
of the peanuts as less satisfying than those who looked at sweet food photos.
When we see photos of food, we tend to
imagine what it would taste like and our satiation sensory kicks in. Viewing photos of tasty food can mimic the
sensation we get from those first few delicious bites. If you do give into the craving after looking
at the photos, there’s a good chance you’ll be satisfied with less of that
treat since your brain is a few bites ahead.
