There is a new concern for people who have aquariums, fish tanks - or who like to go fishing.
It’s a nasty infection called fish-handler’s disease that can set in and stay for months. Unchlorinated water harbors this bacteria. All it takes is contact with broken skin as small as a paper cut, hang nail or splinter and you could wind up with a painful, unsightly rash that is difficult to diagnose and treat.
Handling fish from the grocery store does not pose a risk. However, if you have an aquarium or go fishing, be on the lookout for any redness, swelling or bumps on your hands or forearms. If you see these symptoms, see a doctor immediately. You’ll also need to tell them about fish-handler’s disease. A lot of doctors aren’t familiar with it and it could save you both unnecessary tests and treatment.
