Before you use your microwave again, try cooking this easy solution first.
Add a heaping tablespoon of baking soda to a bowl of warm water and cook on high, uncovered, for two minutes. Wipe the clean steam off the top and the sides with a towel. Residual splatters will slide right off and your microwave will smell like new.
The lemon trick works well too. Poke several holes in a whole lemon and pop it in the microwave on high for 30 seconds to a minute. The citrus oils will make it easy to wipe clean and it smells great.
