Three billion people on this planet depend on rice in their diet – and we Americans have a lot of choices.
There are over 8,000 varieties of rice - long grain, short grain, brown, white and wild. So which should we be eating? Brown! Brown rice is the whole grain which still has its healthy fiber and germ which hold most of the nutrients. White rice has been stripped of most of these essentials. Eating brown rice on a regular basis can help with weight loss, lower cholesterol and even help to prevent colon cancer and diabetes. The healthiest varieties are long grain and wild rice.
So why eat white rice? Most of us shouldn’t. However, white rice is preferred for people with sensitive digestive systems. White rice can also last for up to ten years because it’s been stripped of its oils. Brown rice could go bad in about six months.
