Carpal tunnel and Blackberry thumb are so last century. 21st century ailments...

Cut that out or you’ll get text claw!

That’s just one of the phone and tablet-related ailments most of us are prone to now. Phil Reed, professor of psychology at Swansea University and an expert on internet addiction, has the lowdown on some symptoms and conditions to watch out for:

* Phantom vibration syndrome: This is the belief that your phone is vibrating or ringing when it’s not. It’s the result of anticipation or anxiety related to that call or text your wanting or expecting.

* Text Claw: Rapid texters and Candy Crush addicts may experience soreness and cramping in the fingers, wrist and forearm from overuse of the thumb.

* iPosture: All that slumping and hunching over phones and tablets can put undue pressure on the spine, resulting in neck, head and shoulder pain.

* Screen Sightedness: The rates of short sightedness among young people are up about 35% since 1997 - and are expected to increase another 50% in the next ten years.

* Dry i: If you’re using a phone or tablet, you’re not blinking enough. It may sound harmless but can lead to permanent eye damage.

* Plubbing: This is more of an emotional affliction than physical. It’s the act of snubbing a person in favor of notifications on your phone and it can take a real toll on relationships. Don’t be a plubber.
