Waiter, there’s a red flag in my salad. What to watch for if you’re watching your weight.

Salad may seem like a healthy choice when ordering out - but some salads are more indulgent than diet.

Red flags to watch for in your salad include nuts that are “candied,” protein that is “breaded” or “crispy” and dressings that are “creamy.” These little extras can add a ton of calories to your well-intentioned choice. It’s also a good idea to ask for dressing on the side, since that’s where most of the calories hide. Many restaurants are super-sizing salads these days. If you’re watching your weight, consider asking your server to serve half of the salad and box the rest to-go.
