If it’s the shimmery type – it probably contains pearl essence, or pearlescence. That sounds downright luxurious – but it’s really another word for fish scales. Pearl essence is a big business byproduct for some fisheries – especially shiny herring. Those pulverized gleaming scales wind up in lots of cosmetics, hair products, paint, ceramics and jewelry – basically anything that shimmers like a fish.
