We know how dangerous dehydration can be – but being even mildly dehydrated can pose some problems...
Dr. Lawrence Armstrong, professor of kinesiology at University of Connecticut, says running just a little bit low on fluids can mess with our brains. In a hydration experiment, men scored higher on a cognitive test when well-hydrated, and women experienced fatigue and headache when mildly dehydrated. The symptoms of mild dehydration vary with gender because of the difference in hormones.
Dr. Armstrong says we need to pay attention to more than just thirst where hydration is concerned. If you experience headaches, fatigue, trouble concentrating, remembering or problem solving – take a moment to think about how much you’ve had to drink in the past 24 to 48 hours, especially if you’ve been physically active or drinking alcohol.
