Losing Your Voice?

If you were losing skin or hair, you'd be concerned, so what about your voice?

If you're losing your voice, you probably know why. Laryngitis is usually short lived, and caused by a virus, cold, or by yelling. But if your voice is hoarse, with the sensation of a lump in your throat, it could indicate acid reflux or thyroid disease. You really need to check with your doctor for that.

If it just seems that you're prone to laryngitis, there are some things you can do to care for your voice. When it starts to go, avoid talking. Speak softly if you must, but don't whisper, that's really stressful to your vocal cords. Drink lots of water, room temperature is best. Avoid yelling or screaming at sporting events. And try not to cough or clear your throat too much. Try swallowing first, or drinking some water. If that doesn't work, go ahead and clear it, but do it gently.
