The thought DVT, or deep vein thrombosis is terrifying.
A potentially deadly blood clot, usually in the leg can be fatal and recognizing the symptoms could save your life. Unlike other leg cramps and pains, DVT is typically felt as a pulsating or throbbing sensation deep in the calf or thigh. It can also be accompanied by swelling or redness.
If you’ve been immobile for a while, such as on a long trip in a plane or car or have been laid up in bed, you’ll want to pay attention to any warning signs you might feel. If you do experience an ache or throbbing deep in the leg, get to a doctor right away.
If you’ll be immobile for more than four hours, you can help prevent DVT by flexing your ankle and calf muscles for about 30 seconds, every 30 minutes. If possible, stand up and move around once an hour.
