If you’re married and sleep alone – you’re not alone.
By some accounts, nearly 40% of couples have separate bedrooms. While it may not seem matrimonial, couples who willingly sleep apart are often happier, more satisfied and well rested. It can be especially beneficial for couples who have different schedules, sleep patterns or bedtime habits. Dr. Susan Heitler, a clinical psychologist, says disrupted sleep can often build up resentment between partners which can take a huge toll on the relationship.
So what’s the secret to his and her bedroom happiness? First, you’ll need two decent rooms with all the trimmings. A guest room or sofa won’t do for your better half. You’ll also need to make the move under favorable circumstances with a positive outlook. Couples who split into separate rooms under duress or as a result of an argument don’t fare as well.
