Why 150? It’s the Dunbar number and is considered to be the sweet spot for social interaction. Robin Dunbar, a British anthropologist, arrived at this calculation based on studies of primates who interact through social grooming. Once we surpass 150 in our social tribe, relationships will suffer and members will begin to lose their sense of connection.
If you’re over Dunbar’s number on Facebook and don’t have the heart to start picking off the weak members of your social tribe - consider designating your Dunbars. Open the list and change the status of fair weather or phony friends to “acquaintance”.
