Researchers from Harvard University tested the phenomenon on people waiting in line to use a copy machine. When they asked the question "may I go first?" they were granted permission 60% of the time. When they asked "may I go first because I need to make copies?" they got their way 93% of the time. It seems adding the word "because" adds a sense of importance to your request, regardless of the reason.
