A new study found that drinks made with diet soda can pack a more powerful punch. The researchers served up some cocktails with both regular and diet soda and those who drank the diet variety wound up with breath alcohol concentrations 18 percent higher.
The sweeteners in diet soda speed up the absorption of the alcohol. Even regular soda will go more to your head in a mixed drink than something non-carbonated. Alcohol is absorbed a lot faster when mixed with carbonated beverages when compared to flat mixers, such as orange or cranberry juice.
