Have you been ravenously hungry lately? The science behind the winter binge...


If your appetite has been out of control lately, it’s perfectly normal at this time of year...

Lower temperatures trick your body into thinking it needs more calories to stay warm. It takes a lot of energy to stay warm and cold weather will trigger your physiological hunger.

So how much more do we typically eat on cold days? 200 more calories is the average. You can expect that number to double if you’re stuck inside or bored. The next time you’re experiencing winter hunger, start with protein, preferably warm. That is more likely satisfy your physiological hunger and prevent unnecessary snacking later.
