Has the French Paradox finally been solved?

If you’re not familiar with the French Paradox...

...it’s the phrase used to describe the observation that French people appear to have low incidence of coronary heart disease, despite having a diet high in saturated fats. It’s been baffling experts for decades and now science may be offering up a delicious explanation.

It’s no myth that the French eat a lot of cheese. They’re consumption is among the highest in the world and it could be saving their lives. Brand new research on cheese is revealing some significant health benefits including heart-protective properties.

The French know their cheese – and how to eat it. Processed American cheese or Cheez-Whiz would NOT qualify as heart healthy. Blue-veined cheeses such as ripened Roquefort, Gorgonzola and Stilton are good choices. Those yummy soft, white cheeses like Camembert and Brie are too. The best cheeses for the heart are bacteria-fermented, such as cheddar and mature Emmental which is similar to Swiss. Enjoy those in moderation, on a slice of apple or pear instead of crackers. Wash that down with a few sips of heart-healthy red wine and say “bonjour” to the French paradox.
