Is your wall a better conversationalist than your teenager?
Talking with your teen can feel a bit one-sided for a lot of parents. Gabby Long, author of “Do I get my allowance Before or After I’m Grounded?” says just showing interest can be perceived as nagging or badgering to some teens. Most kids have a natural rhythm. Pay attention for a few days and try to identify their “chatty” times. Right after practice or while they’re listening to music might be their “no-go-zone.” That can eliminate a lot of car rides when parents typically try to strike up a conversation.
Competing with electronic devices can be a losing battle. It’s a good idea to enforce some no-tech zones or times in the home – especially during meals.
