Planting Seeds

The next time you buy salad in one of those plastic boxes – save it...

It’s a good time to start thinking about that herb or vegetable garden. Starting them from seed is really affordable and fun. Horticulturalist David Yost has some tips for us. You’ll need seeds, a container, some starter mix for soil, a spray bottle and lots of light. Those plastic salad containers can actually make a really nice greenhouse. A lot of people push those seeds in too deep – go just below the surface. Spritz them once or twice a day to keep them moist – not wet. You’ll need a window with full sun – or supplement with a plant light – 12 to 14 hours a day. Once those seeds sprout – it’s time for some tough love. Find the healthiest looking sprouts – and pluck the other ones out.
