If you think smoking cigarettes is a bad idea, don’t just sit there...
It turns out sitting down could be even worse for you than smoking. The death rate for tobacco in the U.S. is 3.5 million per year. The death rate for obesity is now around 35 million and sitting around is putting you at risk. According to fitness expert Jonathan Ross, we really need to get moving - our lives depend on it. He says if you sit for more than six hours a day, you are 40% more likely to die within 15 years than someone who sits less than three hours a day, even if you exercise.
Jonathan explains, when we sit, our calorie burning rate drops to one per minute. Enzymes that break down fat drop by 90% and after two hours of sitting, our good cholesterol levels drop too. Our bodies just aren’t made to be still for hours at a stretch.
The good news is, you don’t need to become a fitness freak to break the sitting habit. All you need to do is get up and move around. If you work at a desk, designate a routine action as a reminder to move, such as hitting send on a email or taking a call.
