Beware of toothpicks!

Serving food with toothpicks might seem handy and harmless but it can actually be quite dangerous. Although it’s not common, death by toothpick does happen. Biting into a hidden pick could do some serious damage to the mouth - and that’s the best scenario. If a toothpick, or portion of one is swallowed, it can perforate the intestine with life-threatening or deadly results.

In most toothpick related mishaps, the victim did not realize the toothpick had been ingested which can make diagnosis particularly difficult. It’s best to skip the pick and use fingers or forks instead.
