Brushing teeth - B.C. style...

If you think toothpaste is relatively new – think again...

Toothpaste as we know it was invented in the late 1800s – but cleaning teeth goes way, way back. According to the Colgate Oral and Dental Research Center, there is evidence that people were putting paste on their teeth as early as 5000 B.C. It wasn’t exactly minty fresh though. Early recipes included ingredients like ground ox hoof, rock salt, ground bone, pulverized and charred eggshells, ashes, pumice and a touch of honey for flavor.

About 2,000 years later, the ancient Babylonians came up with handy wooden toothbrushes by fraying the ends of sticks and stems. We have the Chinese to thank for the more familiar bristle type brushes. They used animal bristles and their toothpaste ingredients were much more palatable – salt mixed with mint and ginseng.
