If you like giving gift cards – watch out. The FTC has some warnings for us:
• Check to be sure the protective stickers are there BEFORE you buy them. If the PIN number has been revealed – the recipient could be out of luck.
• Make sure they’re from a reputable source – there are a lot of counterfeit ones out there being sold on popular online auction sites.
• Read the fine print – some gift cards have terms and conditions on there that include activation and transaction fees. And while you’re at it – don’t forget to check the expiration date.
And if you’re sending gift cards in the mail – the U.S. Postal Service recommends using a double envelope and requesting confirmation upon receipt.
