Caretaking Tips

If you’re a caretaker – you probably need a break...

If someone in your life needs your help recovering or dealing with an illness – or even just old age – Medical social worker Kim McNair has a few tips to make it more productive for both of you:

• Ask before helping. People dealing with an illness or recovery still need to feel a sense of control. Give them a choice before leaping up to get something for them.

• Give them something to smile about. Rent a funny movie, or do your best impression of the doctor. Laughter really can be the best medicine.

• Give yourself a break. Letting them know you’re setting aside a little time for yourself can make the patient feel like less of a burden – and it’s good for you too.
