Is your GPS illegal? How to avoid getting pinched for using it...

Whether you use your phone or a GPS device for directions – keep your hands on the wheel.

Distracted driving laws can be tricky when it comes to GPS devices. The police don’t necessarily need to see the device to suspect it’s in your hand. Not having both hands on the wheel can trigger a stop. If you need to fool with your device, your best bet is to pull over into a safe area first.

And did you know that mounting your phone or GPS on a windshield is illegal in 28 states? Other states do allow it but have detailed parameters on your windshield or dash that are acceptable. If you’re traveling through different states, it’s a good idea to keep your device out of sight and both hands on the wheel.
